Digital Decay & Now, Now, There, There, Then
Two pieces of work which is situated in the Festival Cafe. In these two
pieces the work responds to the interactions between people and the space.
Interactive programming on monitors with keyboard and video camera.
"Now, Now, There, There, Then" plays with the real and time. The interface is a children's piano keyboard. A camera points across the table to a monitor giving an effect similar to the infinity effect of two mirrors facing each other. The video image is framed to include the table and diners on either side. If left alone the image remains a real time video reflection of the scene, however if the piano keyboard is pressed then the user goes back in time. The lower the key the further you retreat. The infinity effect also allows you to see how earlier users were manipulating their time in the embedded image. By pressing the action key the playback of the video is reversed enabling you to reconstruct events that have just taken place and have been captured.
"Digital Decay" responds to the volume and frequency of ambient sound in the room. The louder the interaction between people in the room then the brighter the red, green and blue generation of each pixel. These pixels are generated across the screen, passing vertically as a record of sound over time generating a video, painting a record of the sound within the room that then will gradually decay.
